What Is moody 003? Inside Our Ultra-Thin Colored Contact Lens Series

Some colored contacts make their presence known with every blink. moody 003 was created for the opposite experience.

003 is our new ultra-thin daily hydrogel series, designed around a 0.03 mm center thickness, 38% water content, 39.53 Dk/t oxygen transmissibility, and our new Hydralink™ tear-moisture technology. Together, these features pursue one clear goal: a lighter, lower-awareness way to wear color.

The name starts with the number, but 003 is more than a thickness specification. Its design brings together three comfort priorities:

  • Sensitive: an ultra-thin 0.03 mm center for a barely-there feel;
  • Dry: 38% low-water hydrogel, chosen for moisture stability in dry indoor environments;
  • Moist: Hydralink™ technology and a moisturizing storage solution containing vitamin B12 and taurine.

In other words, 003 is a lighter way to express yourself.

What does “003” mean?

The name refers to the lens's 0.03 mm center thickness.

Center thickness measures the lens at the middle of its optical zone. It is different from total diameter, colored diameter, and edge thickness. Those measurements describe how wide the lens is, how much of the iris pattern is colored, and how the edge interacts with the eyelid. Thickness can also vary across the lens and by prescription, so “0.03 mm” should be understood as the specified center measurement rather than a claim that every part of the lens has the same profile.

Why focus on the center? A thinner central profile places less material over the central cornea and helps create the lightweight character of 003. The result is designed to feel less noticeable during blinking, especially for people who are highly aware of the sensation of a lens on the eye.

Ultra-thin does not mean universally sensation-free. Lens awareness also depends on fit, edge design, surface wettability, tear-film stability, blinking, environment, and the individual wearer. A 2023 review of soft contact lenses and dry eye describes lens-related discomfort as an interaction among the tear layer, surface wettability, evaporation, and eyelid friction—not one specification alone.[1]

Why 003 uses 38% low-water hydrogel

It is easy to assume that more water inside a contact lens must mean more moisture for the eye. Contact-lens water content does not work as a simple comfort score.

Water content tells you how much water is present in the fully hydrated lens material. A high-water hydrogel may feel especially soft and wet when first inserted, but its performance later in the day depends on how the material and surface behave as water evaporates. Lens fit, deposits, blink quality, humidity, airflow, screen use, and the wearer's tear film all matter as well.

003 uses 38% water content, placing it in the low-water category. This lower-water formulation was selected to help the lens maintain stable hydration rather than depend on a large internal water reservoir. That makes it a considered option for dry offices, air-conditioned rooms, long screen sessions, and wearers whose lenses tend to feel less comfortable as the day progresses.

This does not mean that 38% is automatically better for every eye. Some wearers prefer the initial cushion of a higher-water lens. Others find a lower-water design more consistent over time. Our guide to high- versus low-water contact lenses explains how to think about the difference.

Scientific reviews also caution against judging comfort from water percentage alone. Surface wetting, dehydration, friction, tear components, and the complete material system influence how a lens interacts with the eye.[2] The right water content is the one that works with the complete lens design and your individual tear film.

How Hydralink™ supports moisture where it matters

Low water content is only one part of 003. The lens also uses Hydralink™, moody's new tear-moisture technology, to support a stable, wettable wearing surface.

Hydralink™ works across three parts of the lens:

1. A special edge design supports tear exchange

The edge is designed to support the movement of tears in front of and behind the lens. Tear movement helps refresh the lens-eye environment during normal blinking, while the shaped edge is intended to interact gently with the eyelid.

Fit remains personal. A thoughtfully designed edge cannot make one lens suitable for every corneal shape, so professional fitting and normal lens movement still matter.

2. A surface water-locking coating helps retain lens moisture

The surface coating is designed to help the lens hold its own moisture and remain wettable during wear. A wettable surface allows the tear film to spread more evenly across the lens, which is relevant to both visual clarity and blink comfort.

The current scientific picture supports looking at surface behavior as part of a complete system. Recent research discusses surface dehydration, wetting and dewetting, shear stress, and interaction with tear components as connected factors in contact-lens performance.[2]

3. Overall hydrophilic modification supports tear-film compatibility

Hydralink™ also includes an overall hydrophilic modification intended to help the lens surface interact with the tear film and reduce disruption to its lipid layer. The lipid layer helps slow tear evaporation, particularly in dry or air-conditioned environments.

“Hydrophilic” means water-attracting. It does not mean that the lens adds tears to the eye or treats dry eye disease. The aim is to create a surface on which moisture can spread and remain more evenly distributed.

What does 39.53 Dk/t mean?

003 has an oxygen transmissibility of 39.53 Dk/t.

The distinction between Dk and Dk/t matters:

  • Dk describes the oxygen permeability of a lens material.
  • Dk/t describes the oxygen transmissibility of a particular lens and accounts for its thickness.

Because 003 combines a hydrogel material with a 0.03 mm central profile, its design reaches 39.53 Dk/t at the stated product specification. This supports oxygen delivery to the cornea during daily wear while preserving the soft, low-water hydrogel feel that defines the series.

Dk/t should not be presented as a promise that a lens can be worn without limits. The cornea's needs, fit, tear film, wearing conditions, replacement schedule, and daily wearing time still matter. Follow the instructions supplied with the product, never sleep in 003 lenses, and remove them if discomfort, redness, pain, light sensitivity, discharge, or blurred vision develops.

003 and breathe+ serve different comfort priorities

003 and breathe+ use different materials and should not be treated as interchangeable technologies.

Silicone hydrogel generally transmits more oxygen than conventional hydrogel, but material category alone does not determine comfort. A 2023 Cochrane review found that the available evidence did not establish one universal comfort winner between silicone hydrogel and hydrogel lenses.[3] Surface, fit, design, environment, and individual response remain important.

Choose 003 when your first question is, “How light will the lens feel?” Choose breathe+ when your first question is, “How much oxygen can pass through the lens?” An eye-care professional can help you decide which lens fits your eyes and wearing routine.

The pink moisturizing solution

Each daily 003 lens is supplied in a lightly pink storage solution containing vitamin B12 and taurine. The solution keeps the lens hydrated in its sealed container and forms the final part of the 003 moisture experience.

The pink color belongs to the solution, not the contact lens, and does not change the finished eye color. Vitamin B12 and taurine are supporting ingredients in the storage formula; the solution is not an eye drop, medicine, or treatment for dry eye or eye fatigue. Do not reuse it after opening the package.

Who is moody 003 designed for?

003 may be a useful starting point if you:

  • notice the physical presence of thicker lenses when blinking;
  • prefer a soft hydrogel lens with 38% low water content;
  • spend time in air-conditioned or heated indoor environments;
  • are new to colored contacts and want a lightweight daily lens;
  • want sensitive-eye consideration without giving up visible color;
  • prefer the hygiene and convenience of a fresh daily disposable lens.

“Designed for sensitive eyes” describes the design priority; it does not guarantee compatibility or treat a medical condition. If you have diagnosed dry eye disease, allergies, recurrent redness, corneal problems, or previous contact-lens intolerance, seek professional advice before wearing colored contacts.

How to wear 003 safely

Colored contacts are medical devices, including zero-power cosmetic lenses. Obtain the correct prescription and fitting, wash and dry your hands before handling the lens, and check that the lens is intact before insertion.

Wear each 003 lens once, for the daytime schedule recommended for you, and discard it after removal. Keep contacts away from tap water, do not share them, and do not sleep, shower, or swim while wearing them.

Comfort should never require endurance. If a lens continues to feel dry or uncomfortable after blinking and normal adjustment, remove it. Seek prompt eye-care advice for pain, marked redness, light sensitivity, discharge, swelling, or changes in vision.

A lighter way to express yourself

003 begins with an unusually thin number, but the series was built as a complete comfort system: a 0.03 mm center, 38% low-water hydrogel, 39.53 Dk/t oxygen transmissibility, Hydralink™ edge and surface engineering, and a moisturizing storage solution containing vitamin B12 and taurine.

Every specification has a different job. Thinness addresses lens awareness. Low water supports hydration stability. Dk/t describes oxygen passage through the finished lens. Hydralink™ focuses on tear movement, surface moisture, and tear-film interaction. The storage solution keeps each fresh daily lens hydrated until the moment you open it.

Together, they make moody 003 a lighter way to express yourself—color you can see, with less lens to feel.

Frequently asked questions

Are 0.03 mm contacts more comfortable?

A 0.03 mm center can help create a lightweight, low-awareness feel, but thickness alone cannot predict comfort. Fit, edge design, surface wettability, tear-film stability, environment, and individual sensitivity all affect the experience.

Is 38% water content good for dry eyes?

Some dryness-prone wearers prefer a low-water hydrogel because it is designed for more stable hydration, especially in dry indoor settings. Water content alone cannot diagnose dry eye or guarantee comfort. Persistent symptoms require an eye examination.

Does an ultra-thin lens allow more oxygen through?

Thickness is part of Dk/t, so a thinner profile can improve the oxygen transmissibility of a given material and design. The relevant finished-lens figure for 003 is 39.53 Dk/t. Thinness does not turn a hydrogel lens into silicone hydrogel or make wearing time unlimited.

Is moody 003 made from silicone hydrogel?

No. 003 is a hydrogel series. moody uses the breathe+ label for its silicone hydrogel lenses, which have substantially higher oxygen transmissibility.

Are the 003 lenses pink?

No. The light pink color comes from the storage solution containing vitamin B12 and taurine. It does not determine the lens pattern or the final color on your eyes.

Can I sleep in moody 003 lenses?

No. 003 is intended for daily wear and daily disposal. Remove the lenses before sleeping.
