Water Content in Contact Lenses: More Isn't Always Better

"More water must mean more comfort," right? It is the most natural assumption to make about contact lenses — and it is only half true. Water content is an important spec, but past a point, higher water can actually leave your eyes drier. Here is how to read it properly.

What water content actually means

Water content is the percentage of the lens that is water when it is fully hydrated. A 50% lens is half water by weight. That water is what makes a soft lens soft, pliable, and comfortable to put in — so it does matter for how a lens feels, especially in the first hours.

The trap inside "higher water"

The water in a lens does not stay put. Throughout the day it evaporates off the lens surface — and a high-water lens has more to lose. When it dries, it does not just go back to neutral; it starts pulling moisture from your own tear film to stay hydrated. In dry, windy, or air-conditioned environments that is exactly when your eyes feel tight and tired.

So a very high-water lens can feel wonderful at 9am and parched by 4pm, while a more balanced lens stays steady all day. "Higher water" is a fresh-feeling headline, not a guarantee of lasting comfort.

How water and material work together

Water content only makes sense alongside the lens material:

  • Hydrogel moves oxygen through its water, so to breathe well it often needs higher water — which is also why it can dry out.
  • Silicone hydrogel moves oxygen through the silicone, so it can stay comfortable at a lower, more stable water content without starving the eye of oxygen.

That is the key insight: a lower-water silicone hydrogel can be more comfortable all day than a higher-water hydrogel, because it is not relying on (or losing) as much water to do its job.

The range most eyes are happiest in

There is no single perfect number, but for most people a balanced water content in the ~38–55% range is the sweet spot — enough to feel soft and hydrated, without the evaporative "afternoon crash" of very high-water lenses.

Read water content as context, not a comfort score. Pair it with the material and your environment: dry eyes and long days usually do better with a lower, stable water content in a high-oxygen material.
