Do I Need a Prescription to Buy Colored Contact Lenses?

It surprises a lot of people, but even purely cosmetic, no-vision-correction colored lenses are medical devices. They rest directly on the cornea exactly like vision-correcting lenses do. Because of that, most places treat color lenses the same as any other contact lens — and a valid prescription is part of doing it safely.

What a contact lens prescription actually includes

A contact prescription is more than a vision number. It records the measurements that make a lens fit your specific eye:

Term What it means
Power (PWR / SPH) Vision correction. For pure cosmetic lenses this is "plano" (0.00).
Base Curve (BC) How curved the lens is, so it matches the shape of your eye.
Diameter (DIA) How wide the lens is across.
Brand / material The specific lens your eyes were fitted and approved for.

Notice that base curve and diameter apply to every lens, colored or not. That is why a fitting matters even when you only want a new eye color.

"Plano" still needs a fitting

Plano just means no vision correction — it does not mean "no measurements needed." A cosmetic lens that doesn't match your base curve can sit too tight or too loose, leading to dryness, redness, or corneal scratches. A quick fitting appointment confirms the right size and checks your eyes are healthy enough for lenses.

How to get a prescription

  • Book a contact lens exam (this is separate from a standard glasses eye test).
  • The professional measures your eyes and lets you try a fit.
  • You receive a contact lens prescription, typically valid for one to two years.
  • With that, you can reorder the same lens — including colored versions in the same specs.
Rules vary by country and region. Always follow your local regulations and your eye doctor's guidance — this article is general information, not medical advice.

Once you are fitted, the fun begins

After a proper fitting you know your base curve, diameter, and any power you need — and you can explore colors freely, knowing every pair is the right size for your eyes.
